No Place Like Home
A Nursing Home Transition and Diversion Story
Think about your day-to-day routine, from getting up in the morning to going to bed at night. Where do you start your day? What do you do and where do you go throughout your day?
For John, his routine consisted of waking up in the bed of a nursing facility, where he then spent nearly 16 hours of his day. His schedule relied solely on nursing facility staff; he could eat only what and when he was told he could eat, get out of bed only when someone was available to get him out of bed, and socialize only when visiting hours allowed guests. He began to lose his sense of independence.
Independent Living, Inc. recently transitioned John, a 95-year-old man, from a nursing facility back home.
The director of the nursing facility insinuated the staff would not discharge the gentleman outside of its discharge schedule, which was only twice per month. He was experiencing depression and hopelessness, and not eating or drinking as he should. With a resilient and determined circle of support who reached out to Independent Living staff for assistance, John had the advocacy he needed to bypass this barrier of independence.
John is home; he loves the accessible space set up inside of his home, provided by Independent Living and peers. He is doing well with his in-home support and is in good spirit. He is eating and drinking well and enjoys going out for lunch and being integrated back into the community. John celebrated his 95th birthday at his favorite restaurant this year.
Every story is different, but Independent Living meets each of our consumers where they are at; we identify barriers to independence and break them down to ensure each person, regardless of their disability type or age of onset, has the opportunity to achieve their maximum potential.
Making a donation to Independent Living today will help ensure that every person who needs an advocate and support in their journey to independence has access to one.
