White Cane Awareness Day

Our 2nd annual Hudson Valley White Cane Awareness Day celebration was held on Friday, October 15th, 2010 in collaboration with the New York State Commission for the Blind, and the Association for the Visually Impaired. The Newburgh Lions Club sponsored the celebration by contributing $500 toward transportation costs for individuals with visual impairments to attend the monthly support group meetings at Independent Living in Newburgh.

In addition to Newburgh Lions Club President David Maksomski and member Will Thorpe, the Cornwall, Town of Wallkill and Town of Fallsburgh Lions were among the 125 attendees, which also included New York State Senator William J. Larkin, Assemblyman Frank Skartados, Orange County Executive Edward Diana, Newburgh Mayor Nicholas Valentine, representatives from the offices of Senator John Bonacic and Assemblywoman Nancy Calhoun.

Mr. Diana, Senator Bonacic and Mayor Valentine each presented proclamations regarding White Cane Awareness.
